Schnell And the Big Projects: T5 Programme
In January 2003, GBP £3.2 billion was invested by BAA to build a fifth terminal at UK’S busiest airport, Heathrow.
Something like 6000 construction workers are employed in this massive project. Security and quality standards remain at constantly high levels.
Once again Schnell is playing a significant role, being the sole supplier of the plant necessary to complete the entire piling section of the T5 project.
Schnell has provided Express Laing O’Rourke in partnership with BAA with 10 Schnell&Gricor GTM cage-making machines equipped with automatic welding robots.
As in all big projects, a variety of different sizes were required from small to large cages. SCHNELL machines’ flexibility allows the production of several different size cages, ranging from small to large.
The smallest have a diameter of 650 mm, with 7 main bars of ø 40 mm , with a helical bar of ø 14 mm, a spacing ranging from 150 to 300 mm and a maximum length of 14 meters.
The largest are 1950 mm diameter, with 38 main bars of ø 40 mm and lengths of 14 meters.
As in other cases, such as the Dubai International Airport expansion, Schnell was able to meet the world-class standards and targets in terms of short lead times, quality and safety, flexible productivity and time optimisation set by a very demanding customer.

Schnell, the protagonist in great projects: DIA (Dubai International Airport)
In 2002, DIA, one of the most important airports in the Middle East, launched a large-scale extension project with a budget of millions of dollars.
Among the participants in this impressive undertaking, Schnell plays a very significant role in supplying all the machines necessary to complete the piling, that is, production of the necessary cages for a total of 8500 reinforced concrete foundation piles.
Corporate Technology in fact proposed using the GTM Schnell&Gricor cage machines to construct something like 28560 cages, some of which 45 metres long.
